Benefits of fish oil

By Daniel Fittman

The benefits of fish oil have largely been debated by scientists of traditional medicine and homeopathy, and while some of the myths about its extraordinary benefits have been dispersed over time, the fact remains that, as a dietary supplement, fish oil is still one of the main sources for Omega-3 essential fatty acids, and is still being prescribed for patients with Omega-3 deficits worldwide.

Many health problems are associated with our diet, our bad unbalanced diet that lacks certain substances that are vital to human health. Omega-3 fatty acids are one of those substances. The lack of them can lead to diseases like stroke, heart disease, cancer, Arthritis, psoriasis and depression. So people with low levels of Omega-3 acids or people that already suffer from the before mentioned conditions should take diet supplements that will give them additional Omega-3 fatty acids. Fish oil is one of those supplements.

There have been quite a few researches made in the past decades and all have proven that fish oil is a rich source of Omega-3 fatty acids. Even though there are (or can be) some side effects to taking fish oil, the benefits definitely prevail.

The necessity for such supplements appears from the fact that foods specific for the western culture dont have a high content of Omega-3 essential fatty acids (while they abound in Omega-6 essential fatty acids). It is only relatively recently that fish based foods, seaweed foods and shellfish foods (the main sources for Omega-3 fatty acids) have been introduced into wide circulation, and it is still only a small number of people that can afford or are inclined to consume such products. As such, for the rest of the population, the need for supplements to make up for that lack in their diet has become apparent.

Fish oil can bring your cholesterol and triglycerides levels back to normal. It will also keep them there if you keep taking it. It has quite a big positive influence on your heart and coronary system. Fish oil can also prevent illnesses like lupus, kidney malfunctions, Crohns disease, prostate and colon cancer and strokes.

It has also been noted that fish oil has a positive effect in the prevention of the onset of schizophrenia, and while studies have not yet been certified, it seems that the administration of fish oil to young patients who have experienced early symptoms of schizophrenia has managed to help control and even appease the symptoms in a very high percentage of the observed cases.

Fish oils seems to work well in cases of mental illnesses. Another condition where fish oil has confirmed beneficial effects is depression. This is especially the case when depression itself is triggered by the Omega-3 fatty acids deficit.

For the conclusion let me point out that fish oil is not some miracle cure that can end all your troubles but taking it has quite some benefits to your health. You must also not rely solely on fish oil - consult with your doctor before you take any actions. - 17269
