Lose Weight and Stay Healthy By looking At Your Fat Intake

By Joe Graham

Whether you are looking to get ripped, on a bodybuilding program, or just looking to lose weight it is important that the diet you eat is also a healthy one. Many programs fail to address this, and it is possible to find yourself on a weight loss program that is not particularly healthy.

Fats in the diet are probably one of the most important aspects of a diet. The reason is that fat contains more calories per gram than glucose and protein, and so are not particularly ideal if you want to lose weight, and fat is also responsible for increasing your cholesterol level which can increase your risk of cardiovascular disease.

The good news is that the overall intake of fats in the diet has decreased over the last twenty years or so and most people realize that fat is the main villain, in the modern western diet, of the cause of obesity, diabetes and heart disease. However, there is still a lot of confusion over the differences between good fats and bad fats.

Fats in the diet are important for a number of reasons. Some are essential to normal physiological processes that go on in the body, such as linoleic acid. Many are vital for the absorption of fat soluble vitamins through the gastrointestinal tract and into the bloodstream.

There are two main types of fat found in the diet, saturated and unsaturated. Saturated fats are also known as the the bad fats and are commonly found in animal fats, especially lamb and beef. Fish fried in fat, dairy products such as milk and cheese also contain large amounts of these saturated fats.

Burgers and many other fast foods are cooked in fat. As such they tend to contain a lot of saturated fats themselves. These saturated fats are one of the largest causes of the rise in peoples cholesterol levels and the rise in the incidence of disease.

Unsaturated or the so called good fats are found in particular oils such as soyabean oil and rapeseed oil. Replacing your animal fats with these fats whilst cooking will help reduce the intake of these bad fats. Cooking methods such as grilling instead of frying food will also lower saturated fat intake.

If you are looking to lose weight or body fat levels then reducing overall fat in the diet is important. However, it is also vital to look at the quality and types of fat you are consuming to reduce the amounts of bad fats you are eating and, therefore, help remain healthy in the long run. Eating more fruit and vegetables is an easy approach to lowering your fat intake whilst still feeling full and satisfied. - 17269
