Treating Chronic Coughs Is Essential

By Jennifer Huang

If you have caught a common cold or flu, and persistent cough is causing you pain and soreness of throat or triggering off other serious health complications, you need to visit a doctor without delay.

Coughs are a defence mechanism adopted by the body to get rid of irritation in the windpipe restricting the free flow of air to the lungs. They are not just an outcome of physiological problems but can also occur due to psychological reasons. Cough caused because of physical problems are usually either allergic in nature, triggered by external pollutants or other agents, or a symptom of some ailment the person is suffering from. The other kinds of coughs are the ones driven psychologically and are normally habitual. This kind of coughing is called Streruphilia and is not caused by any physical ailment or disorder.

Cough can often be acute or chronic, depending on its typical nature and on the basis of the period for which it continues and its intensity. Acute coughs which continue for not more than 3 weeks at a stretch can be triggered because of both infectious and non-infectious diseases. Conditions such as pneumonia and sinusitis cause acute coughing while chronic diseases like asthma cause chronic coughs.

In order to ensure that you get appropriate treatment for your cough problem, you have to visit a doctor to identify the nature and cause of the complication. Doctors prescribe various kinds of medicines to control the coughing symptoms and pain like antibiotics, antihistamines and other suppressants. In some cases, especially chronic ailments, the cough treatment can last for long durations, even months, to fully alleviate or suppress the problem.

Like with all physical disorders, it is always more sensible to take precautions to avoid cough rather than having to bear the pain and undergo prolonged treatment later. Keeping away from smoking, exercising daily and eating a balanced diet that builds immunity and improves overall health can help keep cough at bay. - 17269
