6 Pack Abs - The Commitment

By Dan Solaris

It's common knowledge that the road to 6 pack abs is filled with hurdles and dead-ends. A lean physique and a flat washboard stomach is something only a few fortunate members of society seem to be privileged with. Actually, staying fit and healthy has less to do with luck than dedication and knowing what it takes to keep fat at bay.

Getting rid of excess body fat and developing a nice set of 6 pack abs requires self-control and focus. Avoiding foods with useless calories like candies and fries and choosing healthier alternatives will help significantly in the fight against flab. Starting a fat-busting workout program and exercising religiously is also a must if you want 6-pack glory.

Having a healthy low-fat diet doesn't require turning into a health nut however. Strict low-calorie diets are in fact deficient in protein or carbohydrates needed by the human body for muscle growth and daily energy. Experts say it's ultimately beneficial for out fat-loss goals to eat ample amounts of nutrient-rich foods like fruits and nuts together with well-balanced meals.

A full, well-balanced meal means the right amounts of macronutrients- carbs for energy, protein for muscle maintenance and development, fiber to help in digestion and flush out the bad stuff (this includes fat). We all know the common sources of the first two. Fiber as well as a potpourri of vitamins and minerals can be had from eating lots of fruits and veggies each day.

Cutting back on calories and skipping meals is a big no-no because this causes metabolism to drop. A slow metabolism inhibits our body's ability to burn calories throughout the day. For this reason, breakfast is a must. Munching on healthy snacks like granola bars, nuts and fruit will also keep you from getting famished and eating too much during lunch or dinner.

Even if we don't do it on purpose, we tend to over-eat when we sit down for a meal after going for several hours without food. Doing this repeatedly will result in an outsized gut because eating too much in one sitting causes our stomach to balloon out of proportion- the last thing we want on getting 6 pack abs.

Dietary enlightenment would be nothing without calorie-burning physical activity, of course. Burning a larger amount of calories than our bodies take in each day is the only way to ensure fat-loss and a lean stomach. Doing the proper exercises that have been proven to be the most efficient in burning and keeping body fat in check will let you shorten your workout time- loosening your schedule.

Cardiovascular exercises for speedier calorie burn, core-based exercises that develop the abdominal muscles faster and resistance training for all-around muscle development- consistently doing a combination of these each week will ensure you're burning more calories than you're eating and get you lean and mean before you know it. - 17269
