Can Fish Oil Improve Your Memory?

By Dr. Bill

One of my favorite things is drinking a nice cup of hot chocolate. It's a treat I don't indulge in very often, but it always hits the spot and puts me in a good mood.

I used to get that same mood lift in medical school after checking out my exam scores, but afterwards all I wanted to do was sleep. Drinking the hot chocolate revs me up and motivates me to accomplish whatever it is I have been putting off ...

A little news story caught my eye yesterday. It was buried inside the local newspaper, but you never know where you're going to find a gem.

The article was about the USA National Memory Championship, which is a competition that was begun in 1997 by Tony Dottino, owner of the Dottino Consulting Group. The upshot is that when the Dottino Group started applying neuroscience to business models, they discovered that most people have no idea of what remarkable things their own brains can accomplish.

As Tony's group presented their findings to people they consulted with, he was surprised to discover that most people really did not want to address the subject at all, particularly if the topic was about memory.

Their number one concern: That as you get older, you'll lose your memory.

Tony and his group were determined to get their message out: "Brains are like muscles -- they need exercise. When you exercise your brain it gets stronger, no matter what your age."

Tony had a friend named Tony Buzan, who ran a competition in a English pub where patrons were pitted against each other to test their memories.

The USA Memory Championship was born out of that link.

You may be wondering: what is Chester's secret?

Just wait and I'll tell you.

The Memory Championship has quite a few events:

1. They are required to memorize 99 names and faces.

2. The order of a shuffled deck of cards

3. Poetry

4. Speed numbers

5. They are required to memorize 1000 random numbers or a list of 500 words.

Hell...I was humbled by just the list.

The National Memory Championship has included Chester among its competitors for the last seven years, and he is also the defending champion.

Along with 3 hours a day of memory exercises, Chester takes fish oil, which he says improves his brain function, (as well as a B-complex vitamin, which he says improves his concentration).

Why? Well at least 30% of the brain is made of DHA, one of the omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil. DHA is used by the body to maintain brain cell membranes and boosts brain power. So it's not surprising that Chester finds fish oil a great resource in boosting his memory.

Good food, exercise, and pharmaceutical grade fish oil will keep your brain functioning at an optimum level, as demonstrated by the defending champ. You can keep your own brain sharp by using an ultra pure pharmaceutical grade fish oil from the deep arctic waters of Norway.

For Baby Boomers, their utmost health concern is the possibility of Alzheimer's and memory loss. What Boomers should know is that pharmaceutical-grade fish oil, combined with proper nutrition and exercise will go a long way towards keeping their minds focused and sharp well into the future.

So we all can't count on winning the National Memory Championship, but we will remember where we put the car keys. - 17269
