If you discover a black, cancerous mass on a birch, you may be looking at a Siberian chaga mushroom. It can also, less commonly, be found growing ash, beech, elm or hornbeam.

Eurasians have used it for centuries to treat tuberculosis, digestion, and cancers of the heart and liver. [121]

Traditionally, the black "skin" of the mushroom was removed and the light inside boiled into tea. As a naturally compact remedy, it was conveniently portable to ancient healers.

Modern scientific research has focused on chaga's anti-cancer properties. In Russia, it has been approved to treat cancers of the breasts, cervix, stomach and lungs since 1955. [122]

A 1998 study on chaga extract showed that it did inhibit growth of cervical cancer in a lab. [123] And a 1995 study reported both growth inhibition and death of melanoma cells, also in a lab (in vitro). [124, 25]

Other research papers also confirm that some of the active compounds of chaga help retard the growth of cancer cells. [125, 126]

The black color of chaga is caused by betulin, a medicinally active compound that makes up 30% of the skin. [127] The lighter inside of the mushroom is rich in fungal lanostanes. So chaga tea may be more effective if made with the whole mushroom, including the skin.

Even better are chaga extracts that are made with not only the whole mushroom but also the mycelium, because the mycelium contains higher levels of medicinal proteins than the fruit body of the mushroom.

Other research has found chaga to possess powerful anti-viral properties. In 1996, two studies published results of inhibitory effects on both influenza virus [127] and HIV. [128] Considering the nature of viruses, the most likely scenario is that chaga works on viruses by enhancing the body's own immune system, a theory confirmed by a paper published in 2002 and another in 2005. [25, 129] The same mechanism may explain the reported anti-inflammatory effect of chaga. [130]

Furthermore, alcohol extract of chaga mushroom has been found to lower blood sugar levels. [131] Chaga also demonstrates significant antioxidant properties that help protect the genetic integrity of the cells. [132, 133]

As an amusing aside not related to human health, Siberian chaga may even be used as a tree medicine. Paul Stamets relates a story of a Quebec arborist using a chaga poultice to heal chestnut blight. Not only does it cure the tree, but the tree even becomes resistant to further infections of blight after having been treated. [134]

In his book Mycelium Running, Stamets also lists the following areas where research has shown chaga extract to have a beneficial effect: Bacteria; liver conditions; uterine cancer. [134]

To get larger arms as quickly as possible, it is important to focus on the basics. By that I mean you will get the best outcome on your investment with the lifts. Some 90% of the people in the gym do non-productive movements which are time wasters. Don't do it.

And now, the triceps, a set of three muscles connected to both elbow and shoulder, but work in opposition to the biceps and forearm. Read further for tricep-building tips and tricks.

For the person just starting out, dips are one of the best exercise choices. These exercises are great not only for your triceps, but also for the pectorals in your chest and the deltoids in your shoulders. In order to place the stress on your triceps there are a few tips you need to know. First of all, dipping should be performed between two bars parallel to each other. The best starting position is like you are standing up with two bars in your hands.

You need to hold the bars tightly so you won't slip. To start, you have to squat with your arms against your sides and your torso as erect as you can hold it. Leaning forward can concentrate stress on your shoulder and chest muscles, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but you should save it for when you're exercising your chest muscles.

Good advice. Don't lock out at the top. To allow the triceps muscles to relax, completely straighten and lock your arms. If you are unable to perform dips using your body weight, try an assisted dip apparatus that utilizes counter-balanced weights to counter your own weight. If your gym doesn't have one, get a spotter to push up on your feet to help you out. Doing three to ten repetitions to start with should be your aim.

Close grip bench press is another movement like dips, in that it is a compound movement. The movement is similar to regular bench press. You need to grip the bar about 8 to 12 inches apart. Grip where you feel comfortable, paying close attention to how your wrists feel. Usually the closer you grip, the more stress there will be on your wrists, so start off more toward a 12 inch spacing and work your way closer as you get more comfortable.

As you lower the bar to your chest, be sure to keep your elbows close to your sides. The bar should end up just below your nipples. Full extension of the arms is not necessary. A good time to stop is just short of the full lockout. If you want to bulk up your triceps, this is a fantastic way to do it.
