Ecklonia Cava Extract: SuperAntioxidant?

By Mason Ballenger

ECE, or Ecklonia Cava Extract, comes from the brown algae known as Ecklonia cava. This algae lives in large colonies in the ocean, and ECE is a standardized extract of molecules derived from this water-based plant. Ecklonia Cava Extract contains phlorotannins, a unique type of polyphenols different from those found in land-based plants. Phlorotannins are thought to promote unique biological benefits within the body.

Many scientists believe that ECE is a unique type of antioxidant. They estimate that Ecklonia Cava Extract is stronger than green tea extract by a factor of 10 to 100 times. It is also 40% fat soluble, which lets its effects be spread throughout more of the body than other antioxidants. It also stays in the blood significantly longer than other antioxidant compounds - up to twelve hours, by some estimates. The ORAC value, or antioxidant score, of ECE is also very high: 8300 mol TE/100g.

Ecklonia Cava Extract has been called a "SuperAntioxidant." What is so special about this substance to warrant this label? First, it has a unique structure that makes it especially good at scavenging free radicals in the body. Ecklonia Cava Extract has up to eight interconnecting rings; the catechins in green tea extract have only four. Also, it has the special ability to cross the blood-brain barrier.

Peroxynitrite is believed to be a dangerous free radical that ECE is especially good at neutralizing. Peroxynitrite has been linked to everything from chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia to multiple chemical sensitivities, and many more conditions. Ecklonia Cava Extract also contains important inflammatory mediators, and has demonstrated neutralizing abilities towards oxidized LDL cholesterol particles.

In an eight-week, double-blind, placebo controlled study, ECE demonstrated profound benefits in a group of established fibromyalgia patients. It reduced the time it took participants to fall asleep, and increased overall nighttime sleep. It improved soundness of sleep and boosted energy levels. Study participants also reported more good days per week, reduced pain, and an improvement in their general condition.

Ecklonia Cava Extract also shows promise in aiding in weight loss and fighting obesity. ECE reduced body fat and increased physical activity in obese laboratory rats. In a study of young adults given an ECE-containing beverage, they reported increased muscle mass and lowered body fat. It also has been shown to contain compounds capable of promoting healthy cholesterol levels, providing cardiovascular protection, and scavenging free radicals in the bloodstream.

Ecklonia Cava Extract may help protect against Alzheimer's disease. Laboratory rats given Ecklonia Cava Extract showed an inhibition of beta-amyloid formation in the brain, a substance which accumulates in Alzheimer's disease. Ecklonia Cava Extract has also been linked to general improvements in brain function. Many benefits have been observed: protection of neural cells, enhancements in brain activity related to memory formation, increased blood flow to the carotid artery, as well as general improvements in memory, relaxation, and alertness.

Many other benefits of ECE have been studied. The unique compounds in Ecklonia Cava Extract have been shown to aid with a variety of conditions, such as arthritis, inflammation, allergies, asthma, erectile dysfunction, and diabetes. As this fascinating substance continues to be researched, even more benefits may reveal themselves. - 17269

Excellent Nutritional Supplements And Superior Health

By Anna Hill

Nutritional supplements like multivitamins, specific vitamins; minerals and even herbs can be found in just about every grocery store, nationwide shopping chains and even in thousands of online stores all set to be shipped to private homes within days. Nutritional supplements are often used because folks admit that they are not receiving the sort of nutrition their bodies need from their day by day diet and they rely on dietary supplementation to fill that nutritional gap.

There is a worry about which nutritional supplements are valuable to human health because of the body's power to soak up the necessary vitamins and minerals from a pill or capsule. The Council for Responsible Nutrition has released some findings that common and sustained use of multivitamins and other supplements can amplify good health and thwart disease and illness.

The continual use of nutritional supplements like the separate supplements folic acid and calcium have shown a decisive consequence in the body such as amplified immunity and with the supplementation of folic acid the noteworthy lessening of neural tube birth defects in newborn babies.

In a review of over 10 years of distinct studies on the health benefits of multivitamins and other nutritional supplements including Vitamin D, Omega-3 fatty acids, Calcium, Vitamin B-12, Vitamin B-6 Calcium, antioxidants, and folic acid the Council for Responsible Nutrition released a report called The Benefits of Nutritional Supplements which confirmed that the extensive use of various dietary supplements and multivitamins provides a strong health benefit for.

Other impressive conclusions from this report showed that if all females of childbearing age took a multivitamin or even just a folic acid supplement, it might be possible to cut the amount of neural tube birth defects by as much as 70%. And older patients who took supplements enhanced their immune systems and reduced the threat of hip fractures. Enhanced health from taking dietary supplements could cause significant health savings by preventing or postponing illnesses and diseases by a matter of years.

But not all of the studies and news updates on the subject of supplements is good. Scores of orange foods contain beta-carotene, which is an antioxidant that converts to vitamin A in the body. Studies found that beta-carotene from dietary sources reduced the hazard of cancer and heart disease, boosted immunity and supported good vision. Because of the remarkable results on this antioxidant, scores of dietary advisors began recommending it in supplement form.

Then came two first-rate studies that showed that these supplements could cause critical damage, specially in smokers. The studies tested beta-carotene and vitamin A supplements in people at high risk for lung cancer-smokers, past smokers and asbestos industry employees. The study was halted when it became obvious that those taking the beta-carotene supplements in reality had a elevated degree of lung cancer and a elevated death rate than those taking the placebo.

Beta-carotene and other antioxidants and nutrients are safe and helpful when found in foods but not always when found in supplemental forms. Nonetheless, many of today's diets do not supply adequate nutrition to keep up good health so supplementation may well still be a good remedy. - 17269

What You Need To Know About A Cleanse Diet

By Ron C George

Are you feeling unwell due to the fact that your body has been taking in to much bad food, little sleep, drinking alcohol and smoking, maybe you should consider adopting a cleanse diet to clean up your body of toxins that can give you long term health problems.

Before you take on a cleanse diet, you ought to consult a health professional or nutritional expert. This is particularly true if you have a medical condition or are taking medication. As rule, if youre taking medicine for a limited period of time, you should probably wait to finish that treatment before considering adopting a cleanse diet. This is for the reason that your body may still not be strong enough or for the reason that some cleanse diets contain hormones or substances that can interfere with the effectiveness of medication, or vice versa.

In addition, ahead of choosing a cleanse diet, you really should study the particular advantages you will acquire. A cleanse diet that is too general in its promises, for example youll feel better is very hard to gauge. In saying that, if you dont observe results, theres no avenue so you can object or make the professional be held responsible.

One more good idea is to access the nutritional merit of the cleanse diet. This involves researching the quantities of proteins, minerals, vitamins, fats, fiber, and carbs that the cleanse diet includes. These values are valuable as they let you test the authenticity of a cleanse diet very simply against a nutritional chart. It in addition lets you make clear that youre getting all the nutrients your body desires.

Some cleanse diets will include a minimal number or a total purging of selected elements, such as fats and carbohydrates. If this is the rationale, you should ask your nutrition specialist why those elements are missing and how they are going to be replaced.

To finish, if youre going to follow through a body cleanse program with a detox diet professional, you should also get a calendar or schedule of visits and how much you will be charged BEFORE HAND. Its very dispiriting to have to stop a detox program for the reason that you ran low of money in the midpoint of it or because the Health Professional just realized that additional sessions are required.

Some additional extras such as pills, detox patches and teas usually are not counted in the price so you should inquire about these before you commence, so as not to have any unpleasant surprises. Going a cleanse treatment with a detox professional will always be the most pricey option, although on the other hand, the actuality that youre putting your hard earned cash at stake will make you think twofold about stopping it halfway. - 17269

Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum) - A Traditional Chinese Medicinal Mushroom

By Markho Rafael

Reishi is the most searched medicinal mushroom on the Internet, used in China for at least two millennia as a panacea to alleviate things from everyday nuisances like the common cold or skin disorders to terminal conditions such as cancer.

Working with cancer research at the Linus Pauling Institute of Science & Medicine is Dr. Fukumi Morishige, a strong proponent for the use of reishi in cancer treatment.

Re-printed in the Chinese Traditional Medicine Part III was a speech by Dr. Morishige that included the case studies listed below.

Born in Japan, Dr. Morishige was unavoidably familiar with reishi long before hearing of its use in cancer treatment. Naturally, he believed the same as any other medically trained professional, that perhaps reishi might yield some marginal results on benign conditions but he felt certain any further claims were surely exaggerated. Not until two of his own cancer patients exhibited signs of remission, which they attributed to their use of reishi, did his curiosity peak.

First was a 39-year-old woman with lung carcinoma. The hospitals she had visited all told her she was too far gone and there was nothing they could do to help her. As a serious secondary complication, she also exhibited chest cavity edema. None-the-less, by the time she had her first appointment with Dr. Morishige, the symptoms of her illness had disappeared. The woman credited her recovery to the use of reishi, which her husband had administered to her at 4 grams per day.

The second case was a young boy suffering from congenital liver cancer. At the age of 5, his attending physician determined that the condition was terminal and discontinued any further treatment. At 9 years of age, the boy's parents brought him to see Dr. Morishige who could then find no remaining traces of the cancer. The parents explained to Dr. Morishige that they had been feeding their son reishi via a naso-gastric tube. It was at this point Dr. Morishige determined that reishi's effect on cancer deserved further study.

Listed below are five of Dr. Morishige's cases. Reishi and Vitamin C (for side effects) was used:

Case 1: A patient with a 5 cm (2 in.) brain tumor who had lost consciousness was placed on 6 gm of reishi per day in June of '86. By September, this 70-year-old-male patient had emerged from his comatose state. The reishi was decreased to 3 gm per day. Another three months later, December of 1986, scans showed diminishing size of the tumor. After it shrunk to 1 cm (0.4 in.), the hospital released the man to return home and live with his family.

Case 2: A 50+ female with metastatic lung cancer and hemoptysis (coughing up blood) began a regimen of 6 gm/day of reishi. Six months later, the tumor had disappeared. And whereas before she had experienced severe shortness of breath, she could now effortlessly climb stairs.

Case 3: Patient with breast cancer that had spread to the bones was in unbearable pain and immobilized below the head. An initial dose of 9 grams of reishi daily was increased to 20 grams per day. Two months later, the woman was pain free and released after demonstrating improvement in her ability to walk.

Case 4: A male patient with rectal cancer and liver metastasis began using 6 gm of reishi per day. After six months, CT scans showed diminished tumor size and patient demonstrated improved general health.

Case 5: A male patient aged 60 was diagnosed as having terminal pancreatic cancer and short life expectancy. Dr. Morishige placed him on 9 gm/day of reishi plus 30 gm/day of Vitamin C. A year later, the man was free of any symptoms and back working. After leaving the hospital, he continued taking 5 gm of reishi per day.

Knee Surgery: Reconstruction of the Anterior Cruciate Ligament

By Dr. Stefan Tarlow

ACL Reconstruction: An Overview

The knee is stabilized by the ACL. It is often torn because of the location of the ligament and the fact that external forces are often exerted on it by activities causing damage. Each individual makes the choice of how to treat damage to the ACL.

Surgery is chosen with such factors as the patients level of activity, age, and the stability of the knee in mind. Additionally, it is necessary to know if other knee structures have experienced damage. Surgery will normally be recommended when it will let the patient return to the previous level of activity.

Surgery acts as a stabilizer to the knee. It also helps prevent secondary damage to the menisci (cartilage cushions) as well as the articular cartilage of the knee. The hope is that surgery will help prevent premature knee deterioration.

Across the board, ACL reconstruction surgery is performed arthroscopically. Personally, I believe that an autograft-tissue graft that comes from the patient is the best thing to use. The alternative is an allograft. This is a graft harvested from a cadaver.

However, I think allografts are subject to problems. Recent research has indicated that patients under age 25 who receive an allograft followed by an aggressive rehabilitation program are 10-25% more likely to have problems.

Click here to learn more about knee arthroscopy.

I prefer to use Patellar Tendon Autograft with interference screw fixation for patients below the age of 30 who have no underlying patellofemoral disease. Additionally, I prefer Hamstring Autograft (semitendinosis and gracilis combined) with a rigid extra-articular fixation - the Rapid Loc or Toggle Loc, for example - on the femur as well as the Washer Loc on the tibia.

If the patient is under age 25, I have been known to use an allograft as long as the patient guarantees he will not engage in aggressive, competitive sports for a full year following the surgery. This period of time gives the allograft a chance to heal. Also, I will use allografts when there is more than one ligament that needs to be reconstructed.

The knee is stabilized and stress is kept at a minimum across the knee joint by the ACL.

In addition, excessive forward movement of the lower bone of the leg (tibia) in relation to the thigh bone (femur) is prevented by the ACL.

Excessive knee rotation is also kept under control by the ACL.

Eliminate Confusion of Vitamins

By Jay NaPier

Peoeple are continuing to realize how important vitamins are to a healthy body, more important today as we have poor nutrition, junk food, and crazy off the wall diets.

When you look over the vitamin isle at the grocery story we've become inundated with vitamins, minerals, and suppliments available. There are so many that the average consumer can find it overwhelming. There's a ton of advertising hype and jargon to understand.

Thankfully, when you're got the knowledge about different vitamins and their purpose, you can make a great choice for your unique needs. While the vitamin industry has a ton of options, you should first consider things like quality, natural vs synthetic, and absorption rates.

First it's important to realize that not all vitamins are created equal. There are a great number of differences in not only the actual type of vitamin but also in the way it's manufactured and with what ingredients. For this very reason you'll want to become familiar with reading vitamin labels and know what to look for, ensuring you're not only getting your money's worth, but that you're also helping to improve your health as well.

Surprisingly enough, the United States FDA (Food and Drug Administration) does not regulate the sale or manufacture of vitamin supplements. Because of this, the familiar warning "buyer beware" should be heeded as variations in quality, price, potency, and effectiveness do exist. However, consumers needn't be completely in the dark when it comes to choosing the best vitamins for their own individual needs as there are several things to look for before buying one brand or type over another.

Getting the right information on vitmins start with the bottle, but it goes well beyond. You can't put enough information on the bottle or package. Call the company and ask the questions you have about their product. Do their have their own labs? Do they use independant labs? How do their products compare to others? Can you share the results with me? Get with people who have tried the products and try them yourself as well.

While there are some companies who use certification to show quality, you should know that these generally require a fee to that company for endorsement. You want to find out how the company takes quality and why they are different from others when it comes to quality.

Finally, you can check with your doctor or pharmacist. Get their opinion on the vitamins you choose, but also make sure they are the right expert for you. Many have very limited knowledge about nutrition and suppliments. The best way to compare is to try using the product. You should expect to feel a result in just a few days. If you don't, you might not be using the right suppliments. - 17269

How to Get Big Muscles Fast? - 3 Tips For Getting Big Muscles

By Nicolas Cobos

How can I get big muscles? That's the question that every man on earth has at least thought about once in his lifetime. Big muscles not only give you self confidence, but also good presence among everyone. Girls would look at you all the time because you look sexy and very manly, and you will also set respect and admiration for the boys looking at you.

Now let's get down to the real thing, on how to get big muscles?

As your car needs fuel to work, your muscles need an excellent nutrition in order to recover and grow from hard workout.

The two main types of food you should consume are: Protein and carbohydrates, this to feed and give energy to the muscles. As a recommendation you should have from 5 to 6 meals a day, in order to supplement your body with the amount of food needed.

I'll tell you what! I will give you three tips in order for you to start your own process of getting big muscles:

First: Per day you should eat one gram of protein per every pound you weight. Let's say you weight 140 pounds, then you should eat 140 grams of protein per day. Talking about carbohydrates, you should eat from 2 to 3 Carbs per every pound you weigh. So if you weigh 140 pounds you should eat from 280 to 420 grams of carbohydrates per day.

Second: Drink tons of water. You need to drink at least 66 ounces of water per every pound you weigh, because your muscle is 93% water, so that will promote muscle growth and also the elimination of toxins.

Third: Train hard. To get bigger you have to stimulate your fast-twitch muscles, because these fibers can grow up to 4 times their size. The best way to get them to work is when you reach muscular failure between 6 to 12 reps, as a recommendation you should work the basic compound exercises, such as squats, barbell presses, and rows.

These three tips are the basics on how to get big muscles, but there's more than that, you need the guidance of a professional to do things the right way and obtain the desired results, which in this case are big muscles. For that I recommend you to follow an integral bodybuilding program and nutritional plan. - 17269

Food Labeling Deception: The Lies They Tell You

By Curtis Ludlow

Are you tired of being lied to?

While it's not easy to always stay on top of the latest trends in nutrition, generally speaking, most people do their best to stay healthy. One problem is that restaurants and food manufacturers consistently lie about the quality and content of their food.

Here are the top 7 lies they don't want you to know about:

1. "carb smart," and "carb free lifestyle".

Many people purchase items with these labels thinking that "carbs are bad". Lables will often say that they're carbohydrates will have "a minimal impact on blood sugar". But you have to remember, carbohydrates still provide calories that can contribute to weight gain.

2. "Low fat": Many foods can be described as low fat even if there are no more than 3 grams of fat in a single serving.

For example, ice cream may be called "low fat" as long as there are no more than 3 grams of fat in a standard half cup serving.

You are very often offered portions much larger the typical serving size. So a two cup serving of "low fat" ice cream would contain 12 grams of fat!

Be sure to keep in mind that even a small servings of "low fat" main dishes like pizza can have more than 3 grams of fat to a serving.

Remember, "low in fat" does not mean "low in calories."

3. "Light": May describe a food's taste, color, or texture, or it may indicate that the food's calorie, fat, or sodium content has been significantly reduced.

Labels should indicate what "light" is intended to convey. If the meaning is not clearly explained, you should seek clarification. If "light" is used to indicate a calorie reduction, fat, or sodium, information about those nutrients should be provided upon request.

4. "Cholesterol free": These claims are popular so be sure to keep in mind:

"Cholesterol free" does not mean that you should eat it.

Foods like veal, foul, and scallops contain cholesterol -- even if they are cooked in "cholesterol free" oil.

Saturated and trans fat can raise the level of cholesterol in your blood:

"Cholesterol free" foods often contain saturated fat. The FDA says that foods low in saturated fat must be described as "cholesterol free," but watch out -- most restaurants and manufacturers do not comply with this requirement.

The FDA allows foods with significant amounts of trans fats to be called "cholesterol free." To avoid trans fats, limit foods prepared with vegetable shortening or partially hydrogenated oils.

5. "Sugar free": Some foods, especially desserts, may be described as "sugar free." When foods are described as "sugar free" it's not always low-calorie or reduced-calorie, the menu must say so.

6. "Healthy": Food described as "healthy" must be low in fat and saturated fat and may not be high in cholesterol or sodium.

7. "Heart" claims: Claims like "heart-healthy," "heart smart," and "heart" imply that the food will be low in fat, saturated fat, and cholesterol, and not high in sodium. - 17269

The Disadvantages Of Reverse Osmosis Water Systems

By Tyler Waterman

Reverse osmosis water filters were the only method that was once available to provide purified water to your home. Better, more cost effective and efficient systems have since been introduced, and yet water companies still push the old system over the newer technology. There are many disadvantages to reverse osmosis systems, as we highlight below.

Who Buys Them?

There are many people that are still led to believe by those selling them that the best way to filter water coming into your home is with a reverse osmosis filter system.

These systems are disproportionately expensive, starting in the region of $10,000 to supply and fit, let alone the annual running and maintenance costs. When there are systems a tenth of the price that will do a better job and have vastly reduced maintenance costs, how are people still persuaded to buy them? The answer lies in the big marketing bucks available to push this outdated product. These units cost a lot to purchase and install, making profits to large water companies lending their weight to them great; well worth their outlay financially to market hard.

Unnecessary Waste

One of the major disadvantages of reverse osmosis systems is the huge amount of waste-water that is flushed down the drain in order to produce a small amount of purified water.

Many using a septic system for their waste water have to upgrade to larger sizes because the tank couldn't cope with the amount of waste-water it was accumulating. For example, between 40 to 90 gallons of waste-water is produced in order to give the householder just 5 gallons of purified drinking water. This is an unnecessary and flagrant waste of a precious commodity.

Power

Quite apart from the environmental impact of increased power usage, as a lot of power is necessary to produce this small amount of drinking water, the constantly rising cost of electricity ensures your power bills will reach new heights.

Is Water Safer To Drink When You Use A Reverse Osmosis System

The big question! With all this power usage and waste-water sloshing around the system, does reverse osmosis make water safe to drink?

Well, the answer is that this system makes the water safer to drink, but not necessarily safe. It does a competent job certainly, but no better than the considerably cheaper systems employing more economical methods to filter water without all the whistles and bells whilst doing so.

Other disadvantages of reverse osmosis systems are their removal of healthy minerals and failure to remove some of the harmful cysts and chemicals in the 'purified' water.

One manufacturer of such equipment has freely admitted that these units are only designed to clean up the waters aesthetic properties. They don't in fact act as a barrier against waterborne micro-biological and toxic chemicals.

Another smaller but nevertheless important of the many disadvantages of reverse osmosis filters is the removal of all the health-giving natural minerals found in water. All of these facts should point towards using a less expensive and more efficient way of providing pure water for your family. - 17269

DON'T SIGN UP FOR ANY BOOT CAMP UNTIL YOU READ THIS FIRST

By Curtis Ludlow

How frequently, how long and how hard you workout, and what kinds of exercises you do should be determined by what you are attempting to achieve. Your goals, and current fitness level, age, health, skills, interest and convenience are among the factors you should consider.

For example, an athlete training for competition might follow a different program than a person whose goals are general health.

Did you know that it is possible for top athletes and a novices to exercise together. How? Simple, boot camp fitness workouts.

Boot camp exercise programs include each of the 4-fitness components. Additionally, boot camp workouts also include warm up and cool down components.

Additionally, many camps use time based measures of performance so top level athletes and beginners both can both benefit from the program.

Included below are the minimum time requirements to maintain a minimum level of fitness. Also included are some of the most popular exercises for each category.

1. A DYNAMIC WARMUP - 5-10 min. of moves such as walking, jogging, bridges or "inch-worms". Low intensity exercises that simulate the exercises to be performed in the activity can also be included.

2. STRENGTH - a minimum of 2 20-minute sessions a week that include moves for all the muscle groups. Strength training is the best way to improve strength.

3. MUSCULAR ENDURANCE TRAINING- at least three 40-minute workouts a week that include exercises such as stretching, pushups, pilates, rowing, and strength training for all the large muscle groups.

4. CARDIO ENDURANCE - at least three 20-minute bouts of aerobic (activity requiring oxygen) rhythmic exercise each week. Exercises such as cross-country skiing, and some continuous action games like racquetball and handball.

5. FLEXIBILITY - ten to fifteen min. of stretching exercises performed slowly. This can be included after a warm up or during a cooldown.

6. COOL DOWN - a minimum of ten min. of walking combined with easy stretching.

6-FOR-1 BOOT CAMP PROGRAMING

Did you know that boot camp workouts improve muscular strength, muscular endurance, cardiorespiratory endurance and flexibility?

It's true. With a good boot camp program you will improve all aspects of your fitness level with efficient movements that give you multiple (6-in-1) benefits. As an added benefit, you will also look and feel better too!

Aren't you ready to try a fitness boot camp now? - 17269
