[165, 166, 167] Another smaller polysaccharide named SPCV also had an inhibitory effect on leukemia cells. [168]

Coriolus versicolor extract appears to combat cancer in two ways:

1) By directly inhibiting cancer cell growth and proliferation.

2) By enhancing Natural Killer (NK) cell activity. [169, 170, 171] Natural killer cells are a critical part of the human immune system's fight against cancer.

PSK is used in Asia to treat cervical cancer in conjunction with standard radiation therapy, through which it has been shown to increase survival rate. [134] In a 2001 U.S. study at the New York Medical College, it was also shown to decrease tumor growth in hormone responsive prostate cancer. [172]

Other cancer types where PSK shows promising results include lung, breast and colon cancer, [25, 173] but not Sarcoma 180. [174]

PSK has also been proven as a potent antibiotic, in particular against strains of Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Candida albicans, Cryptococcus neoformans, Escherichia coli and Listeria monocytogenes. [175, 176, 177, 178, 179]

Tests in vitro (test tubes / Petri dishes - not live subjects) have even shown a compound (PSP) from Coriolus versicolor extract to inhibit the replication [180] and infection of HIV. [181]

In 1995, a study on rheumatoid arthritis and PSK reported normalization of immune function. [182]

In the book Growing Gourmet and Medicinal Mushrooms, Paul Stamets mentions being aware of several individuals with Hepatitis C reporting relief of symptoms from using medicinal mushroom tea. He specifically relates a case of a man with swollen liver and spleen starting on a daily regimen of tea made from Coriolus versicolor (Turkey Tail Mushroom) and Ganoderma lucidum (Reishi). After two weeks, the swelling went down and liver enzymes normalized. His HCV value went from 1.3 million to 140,000. [183]

Coriolus versicolor extracts also contain many antioxidant compounds, [184, 185, 186, 187] and may assist the recovery of the spleen after radiation. [189]

Finally, in the book Mycelium Running, Paul Stamets lists two additional areas of promising research on Coriolus versicolor: Kidney health and uterine cancer. [134]

RECIPE

You will need to gather 14 tablespoons of hand squeezed lemon juice, three 1-liter reusable bottles, 14 tablespoons of maple syrup, 1/4 teaspoon of Cayenne Pepper, and two liters of water. Place seven tablespoons of the lemon juice into a 1-liter bottle and repeat with a second bottle. Do the same with the maple syrup, add the cayenne pepper and fill it with water. The hardest part of the diet is the third step, which is salt water flush. In essence, you drink salt water to induce several bowel movements to cleanse your system. Mix one liter of room temperature water with a teaspoon of sea salt. It is easiest to drink the solution in one gulp, but be sure to stand by the sink as your reflexes may sink in halfway through. After drinking the mixture you can go about your night until a bowel movement occurs - typically within 60 minutes of drinking the salt water. It is important to perform the flush in the evening because you will be on the toilet for a while. You must be near a toilet for several hours after the first movement. When you reach the point where you can go 15 minutes without eliminating, you are safe.

How long should you stay on the master cleanse diet? most lemonade dieters do it for 3-days while other can remain on it for up to 2-weeks. Remember, this diet is not for everyone. Contact your doctor before you try it. The next step of the diet is known as the ease out part. It is essential part of the diet, so you don't get sick. Also, remember that the master cleanse diet is a detoxification process. This is not a fat loss plan. Your metabolism will slow down if you choose to do this diet. I'll explain.

When you start the lemonade diet you're going into it with a "big engine". Depriving yourself of essential nutrients results in malnutrition, by definition. Therefore, your body, the miraculous piece of machinery that it is, will turn to your muscle tissue, your metabolic engine, to sustain life. It will break down your muscle and use it as fuel because you'll be eliminating protein from your diet. So, don't do this to lose fat. It does not work that way.

It is a good thing that a healthy energy drink exists for teenagers, so we have a solution for the over-use of these drinks. Up till now, the desire for a quick fix is causing more problems than it is solving. While it might look like we have swift answers to our problems, they are often short-term | temporary | short-range | immediate solutions, which do nothing to fix the situation permanently. Sorry to say, one of the "quick fixes" that we are becoming increasingly addicted to and which seems to be the favorite of many folks is the energy drink.

But because of the abundance of these drinks, it is constantly available to teenagers and kids who can purchase them for a few dollars each. Sadly, research has shown that kids who drink profuse amounts of energy drinks are at a risk of exhibiting rowdy behaviors and increased violence levels. According to the Journal of American College Health, "Miller and colleagues found that a compilation of behaviors known as "toxic jock syndrome" was correlated with high consumption of energy drinks.

Toxic jock syndrome includes symptoms such as substance abuse, unprotected sex and violence". With this research proven in different related studies, it is only natural to see that teenagers and frequent energy drink consumption is not a good combination. So, if you have got a teenage son or daughter, try as much as possible to dissuade them from drinking these drinks too frequently and instead teach them to live healthy lives by adopting healthy lifestyles.

As if taking excess energy drinks are not enough, research has shown that an astonishing 49% of all teenagers are into some kind of substance abuse. This basically means that about 1 in every 2 teenagers you find in high schools are into some kind of drugs. Not only are they into drugs, a larger majority are into alcohol abuse. A recent survey among youths showed that British girls were known to be the most violent females in the world.

When you look at the rate of alcohol consumption in the United Kingdom, you will understand why this is so. The average British chap somehow gets involved in binge drinking at least once a week. Binge drinking is simply drinking lots of beer at once -this could be between 5-20 bottles in one sitting. Now teenagers have discovered a very potent combination that will get them just as high as drugs or marijuana. This is the mixture of energy drinks and alcohol. This deadly combination makes it a lot more risky for teenagers because of the health implications.

A survey carried out in ten schools located in North Carolina showed that students who took a mixture of these drinks often needed medical attention and were virtually unaware of the fact that they were drunk. This is not surprising as it is possible that the large amounts of caffeine in most energy drinks is responsible for high energy levels regardless of how much alcohol you drank. So, if you find your teenager son having a lot of these, maybe you had better be on the lookout.

They found that students who mixed the drinks got drunk twice as often, were more likely to be injured or require medical treatment while intoxicated, and were more likely to perpetrate or experience sexual assault than students who drank alcohol alone. The effect was not related to the amount of alcohol consumed.

Some researchers have recommended that because the caffeine in energy drinks tends to make people feel more energetic, people who mix the drinks with alcohol do not understand how high they are and are more likely to take foolish risks.

"You're every bit as drunk, you're just an awake drunk," said researcher Mary Claire O'Brien of Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C
