Dysmenorrhea: What Do I Need to Know About It?

By Borgon Trocepticlon

Part of a woman's life is to experience pain, physically or emotionally. The pain that is frequently associated with a woman is the pain of child birth. Aside from giving birth, women can also experience some discomforts associated with the female reproductive system and that is called dysmenorrhea. Dysmenorrhea happens when a woman is about to menstruate.

Cramping is the common symptom that occurs in a woman with dysmenorrhea. However, some women also experience other symptoms aside from cramping. These symptoms are weakness, nausea and vomiting, and sometimes anorexia due to feeling of fullness. Most women who experience dysmenorrhea feel very tired to do their daily activities and often resort to resting.

The condition dysmenorrhea is classified into two different kinds based on the duration and cause. The most frequent dysmenorrhea experienced by almost all women is called primary dysmenorrhea. This condition usually occurs before a menstrual period. Teenagers and young adults are usually the ones who experience primary dysmenorrhea. For young women who just have their menarche or first onset of menstruation, dysmenorrhea will most likely be experienced after two to three years.

The second type of dysmenorrhea is named secondary dysmenorrhea. Secondary dysmenorrhea happens because of a pathological root cause. Usually, these causes are pelvic inflammatory disease, fibroids, and also endometriosis. This secondary dysmenorrhea is common among women ages 30 and above. To differentiate secondary dysmenorrhea from primary dysmenorrhea can be quite difficult; although these two conditions differ in duration and onset.

The main cause of the cramping and contractions that occur in a woman's reproductive system is the chemical called prostaglandin. It is a hormone-like chemical that is found in the body and usually increased before menstruation. When these prostaglandins accumulate in the area of the womans uterus, it causes painful continuous contractions. Because of these excessive prostaglandins, the normal contraction response becomes stronger leading to spasms.

Usually, the main treatment or relief for painful dysmenorrhea is non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or better known as NSAIDS. Samples of these drugs include ibuprofen and acetaminophen. A heat compress is also an effective way to relieve the discomfort brought about by dysmenorrhea. This can be done through the use of heating pads. However, it will be different for secondary dymenorrhea because it can be possibly caused by several underlying conditions. Necessary diagnostics would then be required to know what couldve caused the secondary dysmenorrhea.

During the onset of dysmenorrhea, a woman can try to have some hot baths to relieve the discomfort. Circulation can also be enhanced through performance of simple exercises. Exercise can either be just a simple stretching or a total workout. It totally depends on the woman, whether she can tolerate certain exercises.

For some women, dysmenorrhea can be relieved by rest. However, there are also some women who would tend to do more activities when they are experiencing dysmenorrhea. The alleviation of pain in women with dysmenorrhea varies according to the woman's tolerance to pain. - 17269

Reducing Calories Does Not Promote Weight Loss

By Carrie Hull

Calories are not the enemy. Most people believe that eating fewer calories will result in weight loss. This is not exactly true. If you are eating 2500 calories per day and drop down to 1500 calories per, you won't necessarily lose weight. If you cut your calories by too much, then you will reach a dieting plateau; a point where you will no longer loose weight.

Let's begin with, how a person typically goes on a diet. One day you look into the mirror and see tight fitting close and you just don't look right. Your neck, arms, legs, and waist are larger than you remember. You put on a pair of jeans and they just don't pull on the way the use to, easily. They fit tight and are uncomfortable sitting down. Sound familiar? Anyways, on this day, you get angry and frustrated enough to finally put your self on a diet and decide to lose weight. And this time, you are going to stick to it.

Today you have enough anger, motivation and frustration that you decide that you are going to do whatever it takes to lose it this time. You start by skipping breakfast; after all, you'll be having lunch in a few hours. Getting closer to lunch, you feel like you might not make it. You begin feeling week, the motivation has worn off, and everything around you is reminding you of food. Your body is not accustomed to being without food for so long.

You feel miserable, but you bravely tell yourself that you can do this. You don't want to quit, and you want to actually lose weight this time. You still have enough motivation that at lunch you decide to have something small as you are still convinced that eating less is the key to losing weight.

By dinner, your hungry, tired and chances are you have a headache. You begin thinking, "Do you really want to do this everyday? Do you want to fight against yourself?" You are still so determined that you decide to stick with it for the rest of the day.

If you're brave then you may have held off for a week or two, chances are, you've gone back to your ways after only a few days. Usually diets link this end in some kind of bingewhich officially declares the end. Even if you were able to stick to it for a few weeks, you won't have lost any significant weight. You may have even made it worse. Since your body thinks it was starving, it begins to absorb every calorie that enters it.

Although you may have lost a few pounds it was likely just water weight, not real fat loss. And once you begin to eat normally, the water will just be gained back again.

If you keep trying this type of diet, you will never lose weight. Well, not fat loss anyways. Depriving yourself of calories is not the answer. Your body needs the right type of calories and in the right combination. You could be losing weight eating normally; you just need to know how. - 17269

Slim Fast Diet Shakes Are They Healthy

By Cathy Maree

In order to lose weight you must take in fewer calories than you exhaust. The Slim fast diet, like many other fat loss diets, follows that basic plan. Here's a brief peek at the Slim fast diet.

First let's study the basics of the Slim fast diet. The idea and concept of the diet is drinking Slim fast shakes in the place of two of your daily meals. The dieter can also eat a regular meal for dinner, as well as two portions of fruit and one Slim fast nutrition bar. This diet cuts about 1000 calories from the ordinary male's diet, and 500 from the average female's diet averaging about 1200 calories daily. Slim fast recommends physical activity while on the diet, but even without that you'll lose weight.

This Slim fast diet is easy to use, that's its focal point. If people can maintain a diet without much difficulty, they're likely to be successful. Another healthy aspect of the Slim fast diet is drinking a lot of water 6 to 8 cups everyday.

The Slim fast diet is deficient in some of the vitamins required, minerals and other necessary nutrients of a healthy diet. By replacing two meals with shakes, it's easy to miss these things. It's also very easy on this diet, and something that many people have done, to drop out that sensible meal. As they want to lose weight even quicker. That's a formula for disaster because a person doing this will be basically starving themselves.

At times people eat two regular meals and replace one with the Slim fast shake a modified Slim fast diet. It's an agreeable, safe way to lose weight.

As long as you maintain a healthy amount of food, Slim fast diet can work for you. - 17269

Bodybuilding tips: What the heck is the recovery phase?

By Jon Cardozo

If you've spent any time in the bookstore browsing through magazine articles on bodybuilding, you've no doubt come across some pretty strong claims about how the latest supplement fad can provide you with unbelievable results. You may have also seen some recommendations on improving your workout technique and other such advice.

However, an experienced trainer would most likely point out the missing ingredient from these magazine articles. The importance of recovering from your workouts is often overlooked by the bodybuilding magazines and their readers. It's pretty easy to understand why they don't mention the recovery phase in their magazines. It isn't a very glamorous topic, and it's not easy to make a profit off of it. Nevertheless, it's a topic that's crucial to your success.

First of all, what exactly is the recovery phase? Well, let's review how muscle is built in the first place. In order for your body to build muscle, you first have to give your body a reason to build it. You see, on a basic biological level muscle is an expensive asset to have, and the body would rather not have to maintain it. The only way to stimulate new muscle growth is to give the body a reason to build it, and the way to do this is to take advantage of our basic biological need to survive.

When we lift a heavy weight that the body is not used to, the muscle is damaged on a microscopic level. Because the body does not want to be put under this same stress ever again, the muscle will be rebuilt bigger and stronger (provided there is enough material for growth in the form of protein and other nutrients).

This is where the recovery phase comes in. Exercise stimulates your muscles to grow, but they will actually grow after you leave the gym.

If you don't put a limit on your workouts and try to lift weights every day, you may end up hindering your progress. Many expert trainers only recommend you train a few hours per week, believe it or not.

Limiting your workouts and allowing enough time in between them is important to your progress. Getting enough sleep is also crucial to your success. Don't underestimate its importance.

Sleep helps the body repair itself, which is absolutely relevant to the topic of muscle building. Your muscles need to be rebuilt bigger and stronger, and proper recovery methods are crucial to help this happen. - 17269
